Qld CTP: lowest premiums in the country highlights strength of scheme

04/09/2025

The Queensland Government’s announcement on Monday confirming that Queenslanders will continue to have access to the cheapest compulsory third party (CTP) insurance in the country highlights the strength of the state’s CTP scheme, says the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA).

“Queenslanders can be justly proud of our CTP scheme. It is stable, well-run, affordable, and fair. It has been in a strong position for many years now which should give Queenslanders confidence that they can rely on the scheme if they ever need it,” said Peter Gibson, Queensland State President, ALA.

“Queensland has shown that it is possible to have a fair and sustainable system without attacking the entitlements of people who are injured on the road. “We were pleased to see the government’s statement earlier this week which made it clear that premiums for Queensland drivers continue to be the cheapest in the country. This reinforces the success of the scheme in its current form.”

The Queensland CTP scheme retains full access to common law rights for people injured on the road. It is supported by both federal and state no-fault safety nets in the National Disability Insurance Scheme and in the National Insurance Injury Scheme Queensland respectively.

“The strength of Queensland’s system lies in its careful balance, good governance and its focus on rehabilitation,” said Mr Gibson. “We applaud the continued engagement of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission and the insurers who have worked to ensure the strength of the scheme.

“It is pleasing to see that insurers have set premiums at different price points which demonstrates competition is growing. Competition will help ensure Queensland’s CTP scheme provides a good claimant experience and ongoing high levels of claimant benefits, while retaining common law rights and ensuring scheme sustainability.”

The Australian Lawyers Alliance is a not-for-profit member organisation made up of legal professionals, many of whom represent people injured on the road.
