Response to PwC – Whistleblower protections: Exposure Drafts of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Measures for Consultation) Bill 2023 (Cth) and Treasury Laws Amendment (Measures for Consultation) Regulations 2023 (Cth)
4 October 2023
The ALA made a submission to a consultation recently conducted by The Treasury on the Exposure Draft of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Measures for Consultation) Bill 2023 (Cth) (Draft Bill) and associated regulations.
This reform is part of the Federal Government’s “response to the breach of confidence and unethical use of confidential information by PwC”.
The ALA broadly welcomes the Federal Government’s commitment, expressed through the Draft Bill, to extending whistleblower protections for those who make disclosures to the Tax Practitioners Board and other entities regarding misconduct by tax practitioners. However, we emphasise in our submission that protections for all whistleblowers must be harmonised into one piece of legislation, and we have reiterated the ALA’s support for a Whistleblower Protection Authority/Commissioner.
