Inquiry into the potential for a Human Rights Act for South Australia
14 February 2024
The ALA made a submission to the Parliament of South Australia’s Social Development Committee (‘Committee’) as part of the Committee’s inquiry into the potential for a Human Rights Act for South Australia.
The ALA contended that a legislative human rights instrument in South Australia is an important and essential reform for the State, a reform which has consistently attracted popular support and which would be compatible with other initiatives from the Parliament of South Australia – for example, the formation of the South Australian First Nations Voice to Parliament.
88% of stakeholders who made submissions to this inquiry also expressed support for this reform.
The Committee released its final report in April 2025, recommending that the South Australian Government develop a Human Rights Act and conduct further stakeholder consultation on which model of Human Rights Act should be adopted.
