A framework for Voluntary Assisted Dying in the NT

The ALA has made a submission to the Expert Advisory Panel’s consultation on developing a framework for Voluntary Assisted Dying in the Northern Territory.
Our submission addresses the issues raised and questions posed in the Expert Advisory Panel’s five Discussion Guides – including in relation to: who should have access to Voluntary Assisted Dying; what processes should be followed; the scope of the role health professionals and health services should have in the NT’s future Voluntary Assisted Dying scheme; and what the NT can learn from Voluntary Assisted Dying schemes in all six states and from the scheme currently being finalised in the ACT.
We have also raised additional matters in our submission for the Expert Advisory Panel’s consideration, namely: the importance of consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Northern Territory, and reforms needed to The Commonwealth Criminal Code.
