Inquiry into civics education, engagement and participation in Australia (joint ANTAR & ALA submission)  (Cth)

20 May 2024

The ALA and ANTAR have collaborated on a submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters’ inquiry into civics education, engagement and participation in Australia.

In our submission, the ALA and ANTAR noted that last year’s Voice Referendum illustrated the need for better civics education across Australia. Australians of all ages must be educated about those processes and about all the key elements of our democracy well before Australians of voting age are asked to decide on significant constitutional reform proposals – including and importantly when those proposals affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

ANTAR and the ALA’s recommendations for improving civics education generally are also articulated throughout the submission.

Additionally, the ALA and ANTAR have also urged the Federal Government to take further action to address the barriers preventing electoral participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as action to address the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation in Australia’s democratic processes.
