Health Practitioner Regulation National Law and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 (Qld)

25 September 2024

The ALA made a submission to Queensland Parliament’s Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee (Committee) on the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 (Qld) (‘Bill’).

This Bill proposes additions and amendments to the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law in response to what has been identified as “a concerning increase in notifications made against registered health practitioners for sexual misconduct”.

Since the National Law is a nationally consistent law, with Queensland as the host jurisdiction for the national version of the legislation. this inquiry was conducted through Queensland Parliament – at first by the Health, Environment and Agriculture Committee, and then by the Health, Environment and Innovation Committee (‘Committee’) after Queensland’s 2024 State Election.

Lidia Monteverdi from the ALA’s Medical Law Special Interest Group represented the ALA on Tuesday, 28 January 2025 at the public hearing.

Lidia shared with the Committee the ALA’s support for legislative responses to what has been identified as “a concerning increase in notifications made against registered health practitioners for sexual misconduct”.

As detailed in our submission, Lidia reiterated the ALA’s recommendations including that there should be a national public education campaign in order to educate the general public about the existence of the National and Specialists Registers and how to navigate those registers.
