Public Consultation Draft: National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2024-2034

20 February 2025

The ALA has made a submission to the Attorney-General's Department regarding the Public Consultation Draft of the National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2024-2034 (Draft National Plan).

The Draft National Plan is a proposed 10-year plan for ending elder abuse, the successor of the National Plan to Respond to the Abuse of Older Australians (Elder Abuse) 2019-2023.

In our submission, ALA members have called for tangible action to address elder abuse (including the under-reporting of elder abuse), instead of more aspirational plans. We have also noted in our submission the ALA’s concerns about the enforcement mechanisms and governance underpinning the Draft National Plan, as well as how “elder abuse” and other key terminology are defined in the Draft National Plan.

On Tuesday 25 February, members of the ALA’s Elder Law Special Interest Group also participated in a roundtable hosted by the Attorney-General's Department to further discuss the Draft National Plan.
