Inquiry into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system

The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee has published the ALA’s submission to its Inquiry into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system, lodged on 19 December 2025.
In our submission, the ALA emphasises the harmful and criminogenic impacts of youth incarceration, the systemic over-incarceration of First Nations children, and the need for enforceable national minimum standards consistent with Australia’s international obligations, including stronger diversionary and therapeutic alternatives.
