Becoming a member of the Australian Lawyers Alliance further unlocks your ability to advocate for justice.

We have several classes of membership, depending on your profession.

Please note: supporting documentation is required for some classes, and all go through an approval process. Scroll down the page to read more.

Voting categories

for lawyers practising in Australia

 

Full member

A solicitor or barrister admitted, or entitled to be admitted, to practise in Australia.

$650 per annum.

Full member

Junior Professional

A legal graduate, undergoing Practical Legal Training for admission as a solicitor or any other legal professional who has been admitted to practice law within the previous three years.

$360 per annum.

Junior Professional

Full Member - Special Area of Practice (SAP)

A solicitor or barrister admitted, or entitled to be admitted, to practise in Australia, working full-time in an area of the Law for special consideration.

This currently includes legal professionals, where the majority of their work, or full-time role is in:

  • Criminal Law,
  • Other areas at the discretion of the ALA National Council

$360 per annum.

Full member (SAP)

Voting categories

for lawyers of particular backgrounds or engaged in charity and justice work

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice

To be eligible for ALA membership under this category, the applicant must be:

  1. A solicitor or barrister admitted, or entitled to be admitted, to practise in Australia; and
  2. Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander; or
  3. Be a legal practitioner where the majority of their work is in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice.

$180 per annum.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice

CLC/ATSILS/Registered Charity

To be eligible for ALA membership under the CLC/ATSILS/Registered Charity category, the applicant must be:

  1. A solicitor or barrister admitted, or entitled to be admitted, to practise in Australia; and
  2. A principal or employee solicitor at:
    1. a Community Legal Centre that is a full member of Community Legal Centres Australia (formerly NACLC); or
    2. an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service that is a full member of National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Legal Services; or
    3. a charity that is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission; and
  3. Able to provide relevant documentation as proof of membership/registration with the relevant above organisations upon application.

$180 per annum.

Non-voting categories

for associated professionals and students

Associate Member

Associated professional, academics, law clerk, paralegal, international member

$415 per annum.

Associate Member

Business Partner

A non-admitted professional, including, but not limited to, legal professional service providers.

$360 per annum.

MEMBERSHIP YEAR - PRO-RATA PROVISIONS

  • The ALA membership year spans July 1 until June 30.
  • If you join the ALA between July 1 and December 31, your membership will expire on June 30 of the following year and your membership fee will be calculated pro rata up to the end of the current membership year.
  • If you join the ALA between April 1 and June 30, your membership will expire on June 30 of the following year and your membership fee will be calculated as the total of the pro rata fee for the current membership year plus the full fee of the following membership year.

Approval process

Once your membership application has been paid, your membership status is pending from that moment on until final approval is granted by the National Council. Once approved, you will receive a membership kit, certificate and information on our member services. If approval is declined, your membership fees will be refunded in full.


Code of conduct

Prospective and existing members of the Australian Lawyers Alliance agree to be bound by our Code of Conduct.
