The purpose of the ALA Criminal Law Special Interest Group is to develop, promote and respond to the following criminal law matters which have been identified as policy priorities:
- Age of criminal responsibility;
- Women and imprisonment;
- Over-representation of First Nations peoples in custody;
- Drug law reform and harm minimisation:
- The need for bail reform;
- The need for a therapeutic approach to criminal justice and a move away from carceral initiatives;
- The need for increased legal aid funding.
The Criminal Law SIG also promotes continuing education regarding these issues to members of the ALA through ALA conferences, events and webinars. The SIG also provides a forum for SIG members to interact and share information on relevant criminal law issues.
