Queensland barrister wins national ALA Member of the Year

18th Oct 2024

A Queensland barrister who gives his time and expertise generously to support and develop other members of the legal profession, Mr Gerard (Gerry) Mullins KC, has received the Australian Lawyers Alliance’s 2024 Member of the Year Award.

Gerry was presented with the award during the Australian Lawyers Alliance’s (ALA) National Conference in Fremantle, WA yesterday. The ALA is a not-for-profit member organisation dedicated to promoting and protecting justice and the rights of individuals, particularly those who have been injured, abused or are particularly vulnerable.

“Gerry is a truly deserving recipient of our Member of the Year Award,” said Ms Michelle James, National President, ALA. “He has made an exceptional and long-standing contribution to the ALA and the legal professional more broadly for almost 30 years.”

Gerry has been an active member of the ALA Queensland’s branch since the late 1990s and has presented an annual Queensland case review seminar, along with Richard Douglas KC, for 25 years consecutively. On top of this Gerry regularly presents at conferences and other seminars and is actively involved in planning the organisation’s CPD program.

“Nobody has contributed more to the establishment of the ALA in Queensland than Gerry, and he has been a significant force in creating the dynamic and active organisation that it is today,” said Michelle. “He gives generously of his experience to help others develop their own skills and knowledge, and to build a stronger plaintiff lawyer community.

“Gerry does not undertake his large volume of voluntary ALA work for recognition or reward – he does it because it is the right thing to do and we all very grateful for his contribution.”

This year, two members were awarded ALA Member of the Year with ACT solicitor Amy Burr also recognised for her contribution to the organisation.
