VIC lawyer wins national award for leadership in COVID crisis
4th Dec 2020
Victorian lawyer Jeremy King has been awarded the 2020 Australian Lawyers Alliance’s (ALA) Member of the Year.
“Jeremy is a truly deserving recipient of our annual national Member of the Year award,” said Mr Graham Droppert SC, National President, ALA.
Jeremy King is the Victorian state president of the legal association and has been in this role since July 2019.
“Jeremy’s leadership during the unprecedented upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was exceptional,” said Mr Droppert SC. “Jeremy worked tirelessly to advocate for our members and our clients in Victoria to ensure that the interests of vulnerable people were protected, all while running his own practice.
“He made an enormous contribution both to the ALA and the legal community more widely throughout this period to help minimise the disruption to the legal system.
“Injured Victorians needed to be able to continue to access justice throughout Victoria’s extensive lock-down and Jeremy worked hard to put in place special processes with the County Court, Department of Justice and Community Safety, Accident Compensation Conciliation Service and the Transport Accident Commission.
“In a time of uncertainty and change, Jeremy was a strong and effective leader for our association in Victoria.”
In addition to his work during the pandemic Jeremy has been responsible for advocating to introduce arbitration powers to the Accident Compensation Conciliation Service, extend the pilot for provisional payment of medical expenses for psychiatrically injured emergency services workers and reduce the impairment benefit threshold for psychiatrically injured workers.
“Jeremy is committed to promoting access to justice and equality before the law for everyone and he is a wonderful example of how one person can make a real difference,” said Mr Droppert. “Jeremy devotes hours to his work for the ALA and this is a completely voluntary role.
“I am pleased to be able to thank him and acknowledge his efforts with this Award.”
