Youth justice bill must be released with time for consultation: lawyers
26th Nov 2024
Lawyers in Queensland are calling for the Government to release its ‘Adult Crime, Adult Time’ Bill immediately and to allow time for proper consultation.
“We urge the Government to give stakeholders, experts and the broader community the opportunity to tell Queensland’s decision-makers what they think will happen when these laws are passed,” said Ms Sarah Grace, Queensland President, Australian Lawyers Alliance.
“Hastily drafted laws may overlook critical details, fail to anticipate unintended consequences, or inadequately balance competing interests, so we urge the Government to take the time to obtain thorough feedback on this significant Bill. Good law requires careful deliberation, consultation with stakeholders, and thorough scrutiny to ensure its fairness, clarity, and practicality over time.
“This legislation has the potential to have life-changing impacts on children in Queensland and must be considered very seriously.
“It is critical that politics is not put ahead of the needs of vulnerable children in our state.”
