Improving consumer experiences, choice, and outcomes in Australia’s retirement system

The ALA has made a submission to the Senate Economics References Committee (Committee) as part of the Committee’s inquiry into improving consumer experiences, choice, and outcomes in Australia’s retirement system.
The ALA’s submission provides an historical account and also current analysis of the interaction between various types of insurance and superannuation.
It is the view of the ALA that there is considerable scope for innovation in the existing legislative framework. However, there have also been very significant recent legislative changes to insurance in superannuation and it is important to allow a period of time to see what the macro effects of those changes look like in terms of the insurance risk pools and the effect on insurance premiums to members.
The Committee is due to release a report arising from this inquiry by 30 June 2024.
