Justice responses to sexual violence

30th May 2024

NATIONAL

The ALA has made a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC), which has been asked by Commonwealth Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP to inquire into justice responses to sexual violence in Australia.

Our submission focuses on:

  • the need for restorative justice options for victim survivors and for the Federal Government to adequately fund successful restorative justice programs;
  • adapting trial processes to minimise re-traumatising victim survivors, such as during cross examination; and
  • the barriers to victim survivors accessing compensation, including the issue of perpetrators hiding assets in their superannuation accounts, assets which then cannot be used to satisfy a compensation order.

The ALRC is required to present its final report by 22 January 2025.
