Migration Amendment (Removal and Other Measures) Bill 2024 (Cth)
17th Apr 2024
NATIONAL
The ALA made a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee (Senate Committee) on the Migration Amendment (Removal and Other Measures) Bill 2024 (Cth) (Bill).
The ALA’s submission focuses on the proposed removal pathway directions whereby the Minister can direct a non-citizen “to do specified things necessary to facilitate their removal”; the proposed new criminal offence for a failure to comply with a removal pathway direction; and the proposal to confer power for the Minister to designate a country as a “removal concern country”.
The ALA is concerned that this Bill gives the Minister new and excessive powers, which are not subject to proper review, to interfere with the lives of vulnerable individuals.
The Senate Committee is due to finalise its report on the Bill by Tuesday, 7 May 2024.
