Veterans’ Legislation Reform Consultation Pathway

The ALA has made a submission to the Department of Veteran Affairs regarding the Veterans’ Legislation Reform Consultation Pathway. The consultation paper proposes moving all Veteran legislation under a single Act model. This consultation continues the Government’s engagement with the Veteran community, resulting from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide Interim Report’s 2022 findings that access to the Veteran system is one of the leading causes of suicidality.
Our submission addresses some of the legislative inadequacies regarding compensation claims made by Veterans for service-related injuries, as well as broader considerations for institutional change. Whilst we support the proposal for a single Act model, we emphasise the importance of Veteran-centric legislation which places Veteran health and well-being at the forefront of the law, process and procedure.
